The Indian Passport.
The Indian Passport is issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, through a network of  passport offices across the country and the Indian embassies and consulates located in foreign countries. Passport is an  essential document for individuals to travel abroad. The passport certifies the holders as citizens of India by birth.Passport is also an identity document  in India.

Types of Passport issued in India.

There are two main types of passports that are issued to individuals by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. They are:
  • Navy blue: Ordinary passport 
  • Maroon: Diplomatic passport
  • White: Official passport
What Does an Indian Passport Look Like?
The Indian passports which are issued to applicants by the Consular, Passport and Visa Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, come with a deep blue-black cover. At the centre of the front cover of the passport, the Indian emblem is printed on top of which the word ‘Passport’ is inscribed in both Hindi and English language. Below the emblem, the words ‘Republic of India’ are inscribed in those two languages as well. The prints on the passport are golden in colour. A standard Indian passport booklet has 36 pages however if an individual travels to foreign countries frequently he/she can opt for passport booklet that has 60 pages in it.

The passport issued to the individual contains certain information about him/her. Below are the information that is provided on the opening / Closing cover:

  • Type of the passport (S-stands for Service, D-stands for Diplomat, P-stands for Personal)
  • The passport number
  • The country code
  • First and Surname of the holder
  • Nationality of the holder
  • Date of Issue
  • Gender
  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Date of issue
  • Place of issue of the passport
  • Date of expiry
  • Photo of the passport holder
  • Signature of the passport holder
  • The Information page comes to an end with Machine Readable Passport zone
On the closing end, information such as the ones mentioned below are provided:
  • The file number
  • The address of the holder
  • The passport number of the old passport
  • The name of the holder’s mother
  • The name of the passport holder’s father or legal guardian
  • The name of spouse

Visa is an endorsement on a passport indicating that the holder is allowed to enter, leave, or stay for a specified period of time in a country
